Introduction

We have come a long way as a species. Human advancement has progressed so quickly, that it has almost blindsided us to the consequences. In the blink of an eye on the scale of the planet’s lifespan, human beings have made leaps and bounds in the fields of communication, manufacturing, and many more. Yet, to our dismay, the scale of our progress has also applied to the destruction of our planet. Some have unofficially dubbed this period in time the age of the Anthropocene, which can be defined as the novel geological epoch when human activity takes over the ecosystem and has a significant impact on climate change.

This issue is most apparent in cities, particularly in developing countries, where in more extreme cases green areas and trees are plucked out to make room for grim tarmac and housing complexes to meet the rising demand for infrastructure for private vehicles. A high population density sits at the heart of the problem and is caused partially by people moving in from rural areas. It causes a myriad of issues for a city’s inhabitants, ranging from high greenhouse gas emissions, traffic congestion, lack of affordable housing, creation of slums, a rise in crime rate, and an overall rise in stress levels.

Scholars in the field are proposing the topic of urban regeneration and sustainability to tackle these pressing issues. Urban regeneration aims to breathe new life into existing urban areas, transforming them from unsafe and congested lands into a city that focuses on green infrastructure, energy & environmental efficiency, and well-thought-out transportation infrastructures. Not only does urban regeneration pose to improve the lives of people within urban cities, but it also stands to benefit us all by mitigating the harmful effects of climate change on the globe.

We take pride in announcing the 5th Edition of “Urban Regeneration and Sustainability (URS)”, where we invite you to join us and contribute your research to solving one of the world’s most pressing issues that stands to affect not just people, but the planet as a whole.
