Introduction

The creative economy and industry are rapidly growing sectors as of today, it not only has a notable monetary impact on the world’s economy but also a substantial non-monetary value, accordingly impacting not only our economy but our social development as well. Although sustainability is not a recently developed topic, as an industry that contributes to economic, social, cultural, and even environmental development, the discussions about sustainable growth in the creative industry are required to be studied, continuously.

The creative industry shapes many of the interfaces that we use daily, how you use your phone, interact with your computer, or even interface with touch screens in the public. Advances in computer science & technology have allowed the creative industry to flourish, promoting its visage all around us, integrating beauty and artistic expression in everyday life. State-of-the-art developments on this front are experimenting with Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality, which will allow us to fully immerse ourselves in a virtual plane, pushing forward the boundaries of creativity, and enabling artists and developers to unlock their full potential. Developments such as these stand to benefit scientific and engineering fields as well, through innovations in design & modeling applications that will allow for advancements never before seen.

Plainly translated, sustainable development can be defined as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” And so, the creative economy is not only one of the most rapidly growing sectors of the world economy, but it is also a highly transformative one in terms of income generation, job creation, and export earnings. It empowers people to take ownership of their own development and stimulates innovation and creativity which can drive inclusive and sustainable growth.

The 2nd edition of this multi-disciplinary conference will take place online as a virtual conference and will aim to encourage ideas for sustainable development in the creative industry by emphasizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as their application in creative industries and the contributions of the creative industry in achieving the SDGs.

Scope

The term “Creative Industries” acts as an umbrella that envelops a multitude of creative fields that range from music and artistic expression, fashion and textile manufacturing, to front-end development, photography, and videography. The scope of the 2nd edition of the “Sustainability in Creative Industries (SCI)” conference addresses the wide array of applications in creative industries and introduces a productive discourse on the aspect of sustainability, and the implementation of sustainable practices within them. Talking points such as technological utilization, nature-based solutions, sustainable business models for creative industries, and education for sustainable design, convey the main message of the conference, which is the implementation of sustainable practices within all creative industries.

Statement of Purpose

The transformative field of creative industries plays a major role in nations’ productions and economic growth. Innovations in the field aid us all, in terms of self-expression, well-being, and surprisingly, safety. It thus proves vital, that we look to implement sustainable practices in creative industries, to continually reap its benefits. The 2nd edition of SCI aims to interconnect creatives, scholars, and researchers in the field to further deliberate upon various techniques of sustainability across different fields of creative industry, ensuring their continuation for years to come, while pursuing the safety of our planet, through climate change mitigation practices.

About the ASTI series

Advances in Science, Technology & Innovation (ASTI) is a series of peer-reviewed books based on important emerging research that redefines the current disciplinary boundaries in science, technology, and innovation (STI) in order to develop integrated concepts for sustainable development. It not only discusses the progress made towards securing more resources, allocating smarter solutions, and rebalancing the relationship between nature and people, but also provides in-depth insights from comprehensive research that addresses the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) as set out by the UN for 2030.

The series draws on the best research papers from various IEREK and other international conferences to promote the creation and development of viable solutions for a sustainable future and a positive societal transformation with the help of integrated and innovative science-based approaches. Including interdisciplinary contributions, it presents innovative approaches and highlights how they can best support both economic and sustainable development, through better use of data, more effective institutions, and global, local, and individual action, for the welfare of all societies.

The series particularly features conceptual and empirical contributions from various interrelated fields of science, technology, and innovation, with an emphasis on digital transformation, that focus on providing practical solutions to ensure food, water, and energy security to achieve the SDGs. It also presents new case studies offering concrete examples of how to resolve sustainable urbanization and environmental issues in different regions of the world.

The series is intended for professionals in research and teaching, consultancies and industry, and government and international organizations. Published in collaboration with IEREK, the Springer ASTI series will acquaint readers with essential new studies in STI for sustainable development.

  • If your short paper is accepted by the Editors for publishing with comments/ requested modifications, our Editors (publishing department) will contact you once a decision is made and you will be asked to revise and correct it. After resubmission, it will be re-checked. Note: There may be more than one round of peer review and the decision rests with the editors of the title. Missed deadlines may result in complete exclusion/ rejection from the final publication.
  • If your short paper is accepted for publishing without edits/ comments, the corresponding author will be contacted to provide the final version of their chapters/ papers following Springer Guidelines and sign the Springer consent-to-publish (CTP) form to authorize publication in the conference proceedings.
