Introduction

The MENA Earth Systems Sciences Congress (MESC) has been established as an annual forum for substantive engagement and solution-oriented dialogue. In a collaborative effort with leading academic institutions, including the Mediterranea University of Reggio CalabriaUniversity of Palermo, University of Pisa, Polytechnic University of TurinUniversity of Ibn TofailUniversity of Salamanca, and Benha University, the MESC is committed to fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge, and advancing innovation within the Earth Sciences across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. This congress embodies a collective dedication to tackling the region’s distinct environmental challenges while contributing to broader sustainability objectives. The MESC seeks to convene scientists, policymakers, industry leaders, and community representatives to facilitate impactful discussions and cooperative initiatives.

Within the broad fields of Earth, Life, and Physical sciences, Earth science (or geoscience) is a comprehensive area that includes disciplines such as geology, meteorology, climatology, oceanography, and environmental science. Each of these areas contains various sub-disciplines typically focused on natural resources, sustainable development, and strategies for resource management, especially considering planetary scale environmental changes, increasing resource demand, and natural disasters. Environmental changes continue to affect ecosystems, influence natural disaster patterns, and impact the stability of communities globally. Examples include increasing global temperatures, melting ice caps, and rising sea levels, which are consequences associated with climate change. Resource depletion adds pressure to Earth's resources, affecting the balance between development and ecological stability, and may have long-term implications for future generations.

The ongoing loss of biodiversity exacerbates environmental challenges by undermining ecosystems, disrupting food chains, and diminishing natural resilience. The reduction of plant and animal species compromises ecological balance and weakens the capacity of natural systems to recover from environmental disturbances, ultimately impacting human well-being and livelihoods. These concerns pose significant threats to public health, economic stability, and the long-term prospects for humanity. Addressing these pressing challenges necessitates innovative approaches and collaborative action that transcend borders, disciplines, and industries. Due to their complexity and scope, such issues require integrated strategies that blend diverse expertise to align environmental conservation with sustainable development.

As a practical extension of this commitment, we are pleased to offer two unique field trips. A pre-congress trip will take participants to the volcanic landscapes of Lake Albano, Italy, while a post-congress trip will provide an unparalleled exploration of the Oman Ophiolite. These excursions are designed to complement the congress themes with hands-on learning. For more details and to register, please visit the [Pre-Congress Field Trip] and [Post-Congress Field Trip] pages.

Congress Scope

The MENA Earth Systems Sciences Congress (MESC) is dedicated to the examination of natural resources, considering their geological settings, types, origins, and spatial-temporal distributions through collaborative efforts and innovation. The congress will further address both the challenges and opportunities associated with sustainable development initiatives. Serving as a forum for scientists, policymakers, industry professionals, and community stakeholders from across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, the MESC facilitates the exchange of ideas, dissemination of knowledge, and collaboration on sustainable solutions. Key topics to be explored include climate change mitigation, resource management, seismotectonic zones, biodiversity conservation, disaster resilience, and practices promoting sustainable development. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in substantive discussions, review case studies, and develop practical strategies to optimize the utilization of available natural resources within the MENA region and adjacent areas.

Lake Albano Field Trip: Pre-Congress Exploration

Introduction to Your Excursion

Extend your MESC experience by joining us for an exclusive pre-congress field trip to the breathtaking Lake Albano and the surrounding Alban Hills. This two-day excursion, scheduled for the two days prior to the main conference launch, offers a unique blend of geological exploration, cultural immersion, and natural beauty. It's an unparalleled opportunity to delve into Earth Systems Sciences in a picturesque setting, connect with fellow attendees, and experience the charming Italian countryside before the congress officially begins.

Geological Insights: A Living Laboratory

The Lake Albano area is a geological marvel, perfectly aligning with the themes of the MENA Earth Systems Sciences Congress.

  • The Lake Albano Basin (Maar Lake Formation): Observe firsthand the distinct elliptical basin of Lake Albano itself, which stands as a prime example of a maar lake. This fascinating geological feature was formed by powerful phreatomagmatic eruptions within the caldera of a quiescent stratovolcano, showcasing the dramatic forces that shape our planet.

  • Evidence of Ongoing Activity: While largely dormant, the Alban Hills volcanic complex remains active. You'll gain insight into the subtle yet continuous Earth system dynamics at play, including the localized seismicity, ground deformation (bradyseism), and the release of volcanic gases (like CO2 and H2S) from the ground, which are crucial for studying modern geo-hazards.

  • The Roman Emissary (Unique Hydrogeology): Beyond the natural lake, explore the remarkable Roman Emissary. This 1.35 km long tunnel, engineered in 395 BC, is a testament to ancient ingenuity in managing lake levels within a geologically active environment. It provides a unique opportunity to study the region's hydrogeology and historical interactions with its water systems.

  • The Alban Hills Volcanic Complex from Monte Cavo: Consider ascending, or viewing towards, Monte Cavo, the highest peak of the Alban Hills. This provides an excellent vantage point to appreciate the overall morphology of the ancient stratovolcano caldera and the surrounding volcanic terrain.

  • Tuscolana Tuff Formations: Throughout the region, observe the widespread Tuscolana Tuff, a characteristic volcanic rock unit from older eruptive phases. This material, often quarried, offers insights into the different eruption styles and geological history of the complex.

  • Paleoenvironmental Studies from Lake Sediments: Although not a direct visual "sight" during the trip, understand how the sediments beneath Lake Albano provide invaluable data. Research on these cores has allowed for paleoclimate reconstruction, offering critical insights into past environmental changes in the Mediterranean region.

This field trip provides a direct, hands-on connection to the very Earth system dynamics discussed during the congress.

Beyond Geology: Other Places to Visit

While the geological features are central to this trip, the Lake Albano area is rich in history and natural beauty, offering a well-rounded experience:

    • Castel Gandolfo: Perched above the lake, this charming town is home to the Papal Palace and its magnificent Barberini Gardens. These sites offer not only cultural insights but also provide stunning panoramic views of Lake Albano, ideal for appreciating the scale of the volcanic caldera. The town's main square, Piazza della Libertà, is also a beautiful spot for a stroll.

    • Lake Activities: Experience the lake directly by enjoying activities such as kayaking or paddleboarding (rentals available). The scenic lakeside paths are also perfect for a leisurely walk or bike ride, allowing you to absorb the tranquil atmosphere and natural surroundings.

    • Charming Towns of Castelli Romani: Explore more of the picturesque hill towns:
      • Nemi: Overlooking its own smaller volcanic lake, Nemi is famous for its wild strawberries and the fascinating Museum of Roman Ships, which houses remains of Emperor Caligula's ancient barges.

    • Ariccia: is known for its culinary specialty, porchetta (roast pork), and its impressive Baroque architecture, including the Palazzo Chigi and the grand Ariccia Bridge.

    • Frascati: A renowned wine town, famous for its white wines and historic villas. Enjoy a wine tasting and explore its charming old town.

    • Grottaferrata: Home to the impressive Abbey of Saint Nilus, a historical Basilian monastery with beautiful Byzantine mosaics and a rich library.

    • Rocca di Papa: Another hilltop town offering spectacular panoramic views of the entire Alban Hills region and Rome in the distance.

Post-congress Trip

Journey to the Earth's Mantle: An Unparalleled Experience

Prepare for an extraordinary post-congress field trip to the renowned Oman Ophiolite, an incredible opportunity awaiting you after the MENA Earth Systems Sciences Congress in Rome. This is a rare and invaluable chance to explore one of the best-exposed and most complete sections of oceanic crust and upper mantle in the world. Directly observing these geological features provides unparalleled insights into plate tectonics, mantle processes, and crustal formation, making it a truly hands-on experience for Earth scientists.

The field trip will take place in April 2026, immediately following the congress (conference dates: 28-29 April 2026). We are honored to have Nivaldo Destro as our Field Instructor and Supervisor for this scientific expedition.

Detailed Itinerary: Unveiling the Ophiolite Sequence

This intensive two-day itinerary is designed to provide comprehensive exposure to the key components of the Oman Ophiolite. Participants will traverse various sections, from the deepest mantle rocks to ancient oceanic crust, experiencing the geological sequence in reverse.

DAY 1: Diving into the Lower Crust and Mantle

Stop 1: Moho Discontinuity & Stop 1a: Layered Gabbro

  • Location: Wadi al Abyad, Rustaq/Nakhl Massifs, Oman (UTM 40 Q 567351, 2592697 / 23°26'34"N, 57°39'33"E)
  • Our first stop takes us to a critical geological boundary: the Moho Discontinuity, representing the crust-mantle transition. Here, we will specifically observe Layered Gabbro, showcasing the crystallization and differentiation processes within the magma chambers beneath ancient oceanic spreading centers.

Stop 2: Gabbro Sills

  • Location: Wadi Samra, Samayil Massif, Oman (UTM 40 Q 613027, 2554279 / 23°5'36"N, 58°6'13"E)

We then move to examine Gabbro Sills, intrusive igneous bodies that record magma injection and cooling within the lower oceanic crust. These outcrops offer clues about the dynamics of magma movement in mid-ocean ridge environments

Stop 3: Moho Transition Zone (Ultramafic Rocks Hike)

  • Location: Muscat Harbour ultramafic rocks hike, Oman (UTM 40 Q 660682, 2612907 / 23°37'07"N, 58°34'30"E)
  • This stop involves a hike through the Moho Transition Zone, where we will encounter significant exposures of ultramafic rocks. These rocks provide direct evidence of the upper mantle and the complex processes occurring at the boundary between the Earth's crust and mantle.

DAY 2: Exploring the Upper Crust and Oceanic Sediments

Stop 4: Sheeted Dyke Complex

  • Location: Wadi Simayh, Hilti Massif, Oman (Stop 4a: UTM 40 Q 451586, 2666353 / 24°06'31"N, 56°31'25"E; Stop 4b: UTM 40 Q 450445, 2666704 / 24°06'42"N, 56°30'44"E)

  • Day 2 begins with a visit to the Sheeted Dyke Complex, a hallmark of oceanic crust formation. These parallel, vertical intrusions represent the conduits through which magma once flowed to the seafloor, providing insights into seafloor spreading.

Stop 5: Pillow Lavas

  • Location: Wadi al Jizzi, Oman (UTM 40 Q 438300, 2685899 / 24°17'05"N, 56°23'31"E)

  • Next, we will observe classic examples of Pillow Lavas, distinctive structures formed when molten lava erupts underwater and cools rapidly. These formations are direct evidence of ancient submarine volcanism.

Stop 6: Metamorphic Soles (Greenschist and High-Temperature Amphibolites)

  • Location: United Arab Emirates (UTM 40 Q 417500, 2804887 / 25°21'30.2508"N, 56°10'48.22"E)
  • Our final stop takes us across the border to examine Metamorphic Soles, specifically greenschist and high-temperature amphibolites. These rocks, found beneath the ophiolite, were intensely metamorphosed during the obduction (thrusting) of the oceanic crust over continental crust, providing crucial evidence of the immense pressures and temperatures involved in this tectonic process.

Your Trip To Rome, Italy

Rome stands as one of the finest and oldest cities in the world. The history of Rome spans over 2500 years and it has been a centre of power, politics, culture and development since its inception. Creation of the city is steeped in legend and mythology and there are various different accounts of how this majestic place was built. Various Roman emperors and Casers have ruled mighty Rome and this is the place where the colossal Roman Empire grew from.

The following are some suggestions of places to visit while you are in Rome, Italy.

  1. Colosseum

This mighty structure is one of the most renowned and iconic landmarks in the world and a trip to Rome would not be complete without visiting the Colosseum.

Also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, the Colosseum was constructed between 70-80 AD and at its peak was estimated to hold 80,000 spectators.

  1. St Peter’s Square

Rome holds a small country within a country – The Vatican.

This independent state is one of the most important religious sites in the world and St. Peter’s Square is an iconic place where many significant events have taken place.

Located at the front of the Vatican state, the square is actually circular and is framed by two huge sets of colonnades – Standing on these columns are beautiful statues of various religious figures and previous popes.

  1. The Pantheon

The mighty Pantheon stands as one of the best preserved ancient Roman buildings in the world and is one of Rome’s most famous attractions.

Constructed in 118 AD by emperor Hadrian, the building that stands today was actually built on the site where an earlier temple stood that was commissioned by Agrippa.

  1. Trevi Fountain

There are not many other fountains in the world as lavishly decorated and sculptured as the Trevi fountain.

Constructed in 1762 by Nicola Salvi, the fountain pays tribute to the Roman God Oceanus who can be seen riding his chariot pulled by Tritons and taming several Hippocamps.

The detail of the sculptures is simply wonderful and the whole facade and fountain are a true work of art.

  1. Sistine Chapel

Part of the Vatican museum complex, the Sistine Chapel is one of the most renowned religious chapels in the world and has a stunning amount of detail and iconography.

Situated in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican City, the Sistine Chapel was extensively restored in the 1400’s and the place where the papal enclave takes place – It is here that a new pope is selected.

The Sistine Chapel is particularly famous for its extensive and detailed decorations including the Last Judgement fresco by Michelangelo and the ceiling artwork.

  • The Extended abstract i.e., the paper should follow the research paper structure as follows: Abstract (+keywords), Introduction, problem statement, and study aim, Review of the Literature, Methodology, results and conclusion/ discussion, References list using the Paper Writing Template.
  • The submission (paper i.e. extended abstract) should be made following the same procedure followed for the abstract or sent to the conference email.
  • Here: Authors may need more pages than the allotted maximum of 6 to insert figures, tables, appendixes, etc. In this case, they can submit regular papers (max. 12 pages) with the same fixed fee. For a detailed outline of the fees, please refer to the payment table in the conference fees tab.
  • The conference does welcome Arabic submissions (with abstracts written in the english language), which will only be considered for publication in BAHETH by IEREK Press.

Step 3: Rigorous Peer Review Process (double-blind)

This process can only be initiated after payment completion and confirmation:

  • If submitted, the extension (paper) will be preliminarily checked (iThenticate plagiarism/ similarity screening Software, readability, and scope) and it will be peer-reviewed. If similarity issues are detected, the following will apply:
    • % from all sources: 10-15%
    • % from one source: 3-5%
    • Higher than 30% (all sources): Reject completely
    • Lower than 30% (all sources): Ask for revision to decrease the similarities
  • IEREK has an unyielding policy regarding plagiarism. We believe that copying/ taking the ideas and work of other Authors without permission and credit is fraudulent. The Reviewing committee and IEREK employees have the authority to reject a paper during its reviewing process, on the basis of the paper being subjected to either minor or major plagiarism.
  • Each paper/ chapter is evaluated by a minimum of two reviewers, after which a final decision by the responsible Editor is made. There is no maximum to the number of times a paper can be reviewed, depending on the quality of the submission.
  • If your paper is accepted by the Editors for publishing with comments/ requested modifications, our Editors (publishing department) will contact you once a decision is made and you will be asked to revise and correct it. After resubmission, it will be re-checked. Note: There may be more than one round of peer review and the decision rests with the editors of the title. Missed deadlines may result in complete exclusion/ rejection from the final publication.
  • If your paper is accepted for publishing without edits/ comments, the corresponding author will be contacted to provide the final version of their chapters/ papers following Springer Guidelines and sign the Springer consent-to-publish (CTP) form to authorize publication in the conference proceedings.
  • A back-and-forth process: modifications will be sent back to the responsible Editor/ Series Editor and another round of evaluation conducted where needed. Participants/ Authors should regularly check their emails (Junk/ Spam folders).
  • If you are not interested in publishing an extended abstract in the proceedings in ASTI by Springer Nature, please inform the conference support ([email protected]).

Step 4: Extended paper

  • After the conference, the authors of the best papers will be invited to submit an extended version of their research, 8 – 12+ pages in length, (optional) of their papers for publishing in an edited volume to be published by Springer Nature.
  • Publishing your paper (i.e., extended abstract) in the conference proceedings does not prevent the submission of the full version for publishing consideration after the conference if the similarity percentages (SR%) in Step 3 are taken into account.
