What is Facebook Surround 360 Virtual Reality Camera?

Facebook Surround 360 Camera has been invented in order to enhance the ability of capturing, editing, and rendering high-quality 3D-360 videos by creating a system that would enable more VR content producers, artists, developers and even amateurs to start producing high quality 3D-360 video.

Facebook Surround 360 is a professional-grade end-to-end system uses a 17-camera array and accompanying web-based software to capture images in 360 degrees and render them automatically.

The rig includes 14 wide-angle cameras bolted onto the flying saucer, plus one fish-eye camera on top and two more on the bottom. This allows the device to capture the surroundings without showing the pole holding up the camera.

What Makes Facebook Surround 360 Camera The Best of its Kind?

Thanks to the integrated hardware and software designed by the Facebook company to work in harmony.

  • The device can work for “many hours” without overheating.
  • Exports video in resolution up to 8K.
  • Output content can be viewed on many platforms such as Gear VR, Oculus, and inside the Facebook app.
  • Extremely high quality that immediately makes you believe in 360 film.
  • The cameras are globally synchronized. All the frames capture the scene at the same time within less than 1 ms of one another.
  • Each camera has a global shutter. All the pixels see the scene at the same time.
  • Using optical flow technology to analyze the captured images and create a depth map of objects.
  • Using an 8-way level-5 RAID SSD disk system to keep up with the isochronous camera capture rates. This, in coordination with the sturdy cameras, allows for minutes to hours of continuous capture.
  • Control the camera remotely with a simple web interface, making it possible to control the camera from any device that supports an HTML browser.

Price

It costs Facebook around $30,000 for the components, so it will be highly expensive at this moment may reach $50,000 approximately.

However, Facebook hopes by open sourcing the design on Github that manufacturers will create these devices and hopefully lower the price of acquiring one.
