Pisa, <\/strong>the capital city of the\u00a0Province of Pisa, is located in\u00a0Tuscany, central Italy. The city lies on the\u00a0alluvial plain\u00a0of the\u00a0Arno River just before it empties into the\u00a0Ligurian Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city of Pisa is known for its\u00a0leaning tower (the\u00a0bell tower\u00a0of the city’s cathedral), but in fact, the city contains more than 20 other historic churches and several medieval palaces. Most of the city’s architecture comes from its history as one of the Italian\u00a0maritime republics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pisa is now a quiet provincial university town that is well-known for its art and architectural treasures. While the\u00a0 leaning Tower of Pisa originally known as ” the bell tower of the cathedral “, is the most famous image of the city, it is one of the many works of architecture in the city’s\u00a0Square which is originally known as \u201cPiazza del Duomo\u201d<\/em>, also known, since the 20th century as\u201d\u00a0Piazza dei Miracoli\u201d<\/em>\u00a0(Square of Miracles), to the north of the old town centre. The\u00a0Square of Miracles also houses the\u00a0Cathedral\u201cthe Duomo<\/em>\u201d, the\u00a0Baptistry\u00a0and the monumental cemetery\u00a0\u201cthe Campo Santo<\/em>\u201d. The medieval complex includes the above-mentioned four sacred buildings, the hospital and few palaces. All the complex is kept by the\u00a0Opera (fabrica ecclesiae)\u00a0della Primaziale Pisana<\/em>, an old nonprofit foundation that operates since the building of the Cathedral to the maintenance of the sacred buildings. The area is framed by medieval walls kept by municipality administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The city also houses one of the renowned universities, the\u00a0University of Pisa, which dates back to the 11th century and also has the\u00a0Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, founded in 1810 by Napoleon, and the\u00a0Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, as the best-sanctioned\u00a0Superior Graduate Schools in Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 1343\u00a0by an edict of Pope\u00a0Clement VI, the University of Pisa, is the\u00a019th oldest extant university in the world\u00a0and the 10th oldest in\u00a0Italy.\u00a0The university houses the\u00a0Orto botanico di Pisa which was founded in 1544 and is considered Europe’s oldest academic botanicalgarden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Italian\u00a0public research university is especially renowned in the fields of Physics, Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Science. The\u00a0Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0Scuola Normale Superiore<\/em>, the Italian academic \u00e9lite institutions are noted mostly for research and the education of graduate students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

IEREK chose to organize the 3rd<\/sup> edition of the International Conference on Cities\u2019 Identities Through Architecture and Art, in Pisa, Italy as it is one of the prime examples of a city with an architectural identity, as most of the city\u2019s architecture were built on a religious and sacred architectural style. The city has preserved its architectural identity throughout the centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is easy to identify a Pisa\u2019s identity by looking at its architecture. We can see all the cultural, historical and economic monuments meet in a place like the Square of Miracles. Preserving such an identity is the aim of the conference, where we will discuss the importance, development, reconstruction and preservation of cities heritage.<\/p>\n
