\u00a0What is the meaning of “Sustainability”?<\/span><\/h1>\n

Sustainability<\/b><\/a>\u00a0(from\u00a0sustain<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0ability<\/i>) is the property of\u00a0biological systems\u00a0to remain\u00a0diverse\u00a0and\u00a0productive\u00a0indefinitely. Long-lived and healthy\u00a0wetlands\u00a0and\u00a0forests\u00a0are examples of sustainable biological systems<\/a>. In more general terms, sustainability is the endurance of systems and processes. The\u00a0organizing principle\u00a0for sustainability is\u00a0sustainable development, which includes the four interconnected domains: ecology, economics, politics, and culture.\u00a0Sustainability science\u00a0is the study of sustainable development and environmental science<\/a>.\u00a0Sustainability can also be defined as a socio-ecological process characterized by the pursuit of a common ideal.\u00a0An ideal is by definition unattainable in a given time and space. However, by persistently and dynamically approaching it, the process results in a sustainable system.<\/sup><\/p>\n

The most important factors of sustainability:<\/span><\/h2>\n

Natural environment:<\/span><\/h3>\n

is the rates of renewable resource harvest, pollution creation, and non-renewable resource depletion<\/a> that can be continued indefinitely. If they cannot be continued indefinitely then they are not\u00a0sustainable<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Economic vitality:<\/span><\/h3>\n

a growing economy where people have jobs, pay taxes and are buying and selling goods and services. – low unemployment, less people on welfare, etc<\/span><\/p>\n

Healthy communities:<\/span><\/h3>\n

is a major field of study within the medical and clinical sciences which focuses on the maintenance, protection and improvement of the health status of population groups and communities as opposed to the health of individual patients. It is a distinct field of study that may be taught within a separate school of\u00a0public health\u00a0or\u00a0environmental health.<\/p>\n

What is the meaning of “sustainable development”?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

is the\u00a0organizing principle\u00a0for meeting\u00a0human development\u00a0goals while at the same time\u00a0sustaining\u00a0the ability of natural systems to provide the\u00a0natural resources\u00a0and\u00a0ecosystem services<\/a>\u00a0upon which the\u00a0economy\u00a0and\u00a0society\u00a0depend. The desirable end result is a state of society where living conditions and resource use continue to meet human needs without undermining the integrity and stability of the natural systems. While the modern concept of sustainable development<\/a> is derived mostly from the 1987\u00a0Brundtland Report, it is also rooted in earlier ideas about\u00a0sustainable forest management\u00a0and twentieth-century environmental concerns. As the concept developed, it has shifted to focus more on\u00a0economic development,\u00a0social development\u00a0and environmental protection<\/a> for future generations. It has been suggested that “the term ‘sustainability’ should be viewed as humanity’s target goal of human-ecosystem equilibrium (homeostasis), while ‘sustainable development’ refers to the holistic approach and temporal processes that lead us to the end point of sustainability. And that’s the reason for the importance of sustainability in cities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
