Introduction

Parametricism 101 helps students to gain basic knowledge of generative / parametric design. Workshop participants are expected to have the ability to design simple parametric design systems using Grasshopper (Rhino. Plugin) by the end of the workshop.

Student Performance Objectives:

  • Understanding basic terms of generative design, such as; Computational, Parametric, Algorithmic, Logic, Design System, Design Alternatives, etc.
  • Understanding basic concepts of Grasshopper, such as; Mathematical Function, Geometry, etc.
  • Creating a simple parametric design system.
Program

Day 1

9:30 – 10:00 :  Presentation workshop

10.00 – 11.00 :  Introduction to parametric design, examples.

11.00 – 13.00 :  Grasshopper interface, algorithmic logic

13.00 – 14.30 :  Break.

14:30 – 16:00 :  Grasshopper: components, connections.

16.00 – 18.00 :  Essential mathematical functions and logical operations.

18:00 – 19:00 :  Exercise.

Day 2

9:30 – 11:30 :  Series, data management.

11:30 – 13:30 :  Aljomoa praying break.

13.30 – 15.00 :  Definition of curve and surface analysis.

15:00 – 16:00 :  Definition of grids and patterns.

16.00 – 18.00 :  Paneling, dynamic pattern.

18:00 _ 19:30 :  Exercise.

Day 3

9:30 – 11:30 :  Image sampler, attraction points.

11:30 – 13:00 :  Weaver bird plug-in; subdivision algorithms.

13.00 – 14.30 : Break.

14:00 – 16:00 :  Weaver bird plug-in; subdivision algorithms supplemented with point attractors.

16:00 – 17:30 :  Slider animation, Exercise.
